Mazda just released the details for the Cash for Clunkers program. Basically if your trade-in is old and a gas hog the federal government will kick in $3,500 to $4,500 as the trade-in value.
Craigslist is filled with the cesspool of human scum who will gladly scam you out of both buying and selling a used car – my advice is to not use CraigsList; don’t come back crying if you get screwed using CraigsList – I warned you right here! Don’t use CraigsList!
However, you will probably be tempted to use the free listing service so here are some tips.
Congratulations – you just sold your used car to a very nice couple! CarFax is your guiding light in the process of buying a used car. EVERY car, since 1965, has a VIN and that VIN identifies the car in CarFax. EVERY TIME the car was brought into a dealer or mechanic for maintenance or repair that visit appears in CarFax.

If your car looks showroom ready you can expect top dollar on the resale market. If it looks sad, stinks, and has garbage in the backseat you can expect little interest and low resale value. Take a Saturday/Sunday and make your car look like it just rolled off the showroom floor.
No matter what objection the buyer throws at you the best way to address the objection is to just throw that monkey right back onto the buyer. This is the trick that ALL salesreps use – let the buyer answer their own question and see if it is in the seller’s best interests. Some examples:

If a used car has less than 140,000 miles you can get extended warranty protection; it’s not cheap but it will cover the major things that can go wrong for and additional 5 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first.
