CarsForSale.com is a fantastic place to buy and sell used cars – it’s totally free.
You can supply up to 12 photos, in the listing, and do just that – supply the maximum number of photos allowable.
VINs are required for the listing and you can thus look up the VIN and for $2 check to see if there are any major problems with the car. I never see CarFax references so I’m guessing that they are not allowed – don’t know why.
Anyway there is a lot of traffic at the website and it’s free. Since it’s free EVERY used car auto dealer is listed there.

Do Research on the car/truck

The Internet is full of research material – way too much of it. Luckily for you I’ve distilled all that into a few places that give you all the facts you need. Bookmark these websites for fast research. Do some general research first and then drill down to the facts you need.
This research has nothing to do about current prices – it has everything to do with safety, reliability, cars to avoid, cars that hold their value, etc. Of course you have to have a ballpark figure in your mind when doing research but you will be amazed how doing the research will change your opinion as to what car to buy.
AutoTrader.com
AutoTrader is, without doubt, the king of used car classified ads. Nothing even comes close. Your neighborhood new and used car dealer lists in AutoTrader and if you ever sell your car(s)/trucks(s) AutoTrader is the ...

Setting a Budget

Buying a used car can easily turn into an impulse purchase – this is NOT how to buy a great used car. Come up with the cash or find out your FICO score and determine what monthly payments you can afford.
Don’t forget the sales tax – that’s easily 7% or more and the fees to register the new title. Insurance can be a large component of the initial costs and recurring costs. Before you can get license plates/tags you MUST pay the state sales tax- don’t buy a used car and have no money left over for insurance and taxes.
Two things will tell you what’s in your budget – cash in hand if a cash purchase or FICO if a financed purchase. Its been my experience that every used car I buy is just outside my budget – funny how that always happens. If you need to finance ...

Why would you not buy one of the top 10 used cars? Because you have your heart set on something the “lights your fire” and are willing to buy an inferior used car compared to the top 10. It’s your choice but you’ve got to ask yourself why your are willing to settle for a used car that isn’t in the top 10 and will cost you just as much or even more with you throw in all the problems of inferior used cars.
Sedans:
Compact: Hyundai Elantra – a brand new Elantra is a bargain and a used one is a steal. A new Hyundai is covered by a 10-year, 100,000 mile warranty but used cars are covered by 5-year 60,000 mile warranty unless bought as a certified pre-owned car from a Hyundai dealership that will add $2,000 to the price of the car.

I Object!

The ONLY thing standing in the way of you making a fantastic sale is the objections from buyers. Learn the typical objections, from used car buyers, and how to handle them and your sale will be much easier and you will get a higher sales price.
Don’t expect to sell your car to the first person who comes over and looks at your car – expect to see 5 – 10 buyers before you make a sale. The whole goal here is for you to make as much money as possible – if you just want to get rid of your car donate it to a charity. Don’t panic and sell to the first person and lower your price – you will kick yourself in the butt for a decade – trust me; my butt still aches sometimes.

You don’t want a skunk in your garage, they stink- so here are 10 used car skunks you MUST NOT BUY, no matter how cheap you can buy the skunk:
1) Audi Q5 (V6) years 2002 – 2011. This skunk has high problem rates and is rated as “unreliable”. Problems include the audio system, engine cooling, and body integrity to name but a few problems.
2) BMW 535i – years 2008 – 2011. Problems include electrical and fuel systems to name just a few.
3) Cadillac STS – all years manufactured. This is a very smelly skunk – count on lots of squeaks and rattles from the cheaply made body, the drive system including steering, transmission, and axles, and the electrical system.
4) Chevrolet Aveo – all years manufactured. Count on problems from the A/C system that cost thousands of dollars to fix, a fuel system riddled with problems and just an overall cheaply made American car.
5) Dodge ...

Models to Avoid
Once you have bought your perfect used car and the thrill of driving has worn off, about 30 days or so, the reliability of starting and running the car becomes far more important than the initial thrill of ownership. Most used cars are a living nightmare and the reason you need to spend time doing research to find a car that isn’t about to make ownership a disappointment.
Well, I’ve done a lot of research and come up with some “ballpark” recommendations – there are exceptions to each recommendation but I’ve left out about 70% of the used car market – let someone else buy those turkeys. Here is the list of turkeys to avoid.
Red Alert! These manufactures and models are to be avoided if you want to sleep at night.

Manufacturers:
Just in case I didn’t make it clear earlier, here are manufacturers/models to avoid – they are nothing but ...

No matter what objection the buyer throws at you the best way to address the objection is to just throw that monkey right back onto the buyer. This is the trick that ALL salesreps use – let the buyer answer their own question and see if it is in the seller’s best interests. Some examples:
Buyer: The asking price is too high – Seller: What price do you feel is fair?
Buyer: I don’t know what a fair price is – Seller: Would you agree to what Edmunds’ fair price is?
Buyer: The car isn’t fuel efficient – Seller: Do you agree that Edmunds does great car research? Let’s see what they say?
Buyer: I like the car, can you hold it until I get my paycheck in 2 weeks – Seller: Sure, give me a nonrefundable $250 security deposit I will.
Always take the buyer’s question and ...
